about batik and baker
Batik And Baker is a pastry pop-up serving sweets and snacks inspired by Malaysian and Southeast Asian flavors, and a showcase of California’s seasonal produce. Built on comfort and curiosity, the menu is a celebration of classic desserts and an invitation to try something new and unexpected.
All treats are small-batch and scratchmade in Oakland, California. Building block ingredients include King Arthur Flour, Central Milling and Valrhona Chocolate.
Batik And Baker also makes whole cakes and sweets for celebrations and events.
You can find Batik And Baker every Saturday (except the first Saturday of each month) at pop-up locations throughout the Bay Area. Check out my Instagram for the latest pop-up schedule.
hey there, stranger
I’m Audrey.
Batik And Baker is a craving for the familiar flavors that I grew up with in Penang, Malaysia, and of weekends baking with mom from photocopies of cake and tart recipes from British cookbooks. Batik And Baker also reflects technique and travel, refinement from skills honed from professional kitchens, and my insatiable hunger to eat everything everywhere, and as well as a fascination with new foods, flavors and ingredients.
I started Batik And Baker in 2021 as a pastry play space. A space where I can continue practicing pastry professionally after having left the restaurant. A project to stay creative and to process what I wanted and needed for myself. It continues to be a place of practice, for expression, creativity and curiosity. It’s also grown to be about building connections with my community.
I have a slight obsession for small bites. From kuihs, dim sum to mignardises, I love the satisfaction from flavor-packed two-bite snacks. I’m murderous when I'm hungry and should not be held accountable for actions taken in hunger.
I’m a professionally-trained pastry person practicing a craft. I’m a graduate of San Francisco Cooking School. And I’ve had the good fortune to work with and learned from the amazing chefs & craftspeople at Craftsman And Wolves, Mister Jiu’s, Cotogna and Quince.
I’m also pug mom to an adorable derp named Steve, after Buscemi. And yes, his tongue is always out. Follow him on Instagram at @stevedapug
what is batik?
Pronounced as bah-teak, batik is patterned cloth made using a wax-resist dyeing technique that originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. My maternal grandma — my Poh Poh — was a Nyonya, of Peranakan descent, and always wore an ankle-length wraparound batik sarong. She is who I take inspiration from, for this space, for nourishment and for quiet strength. I miss her everyday.
